Mountaineering again

Without having to return to Tbilisi every once in a while, we regained our focus on traveling. First, we restocked our supplies, including fresh bread. Then, we headed into our beloved mountains. We took a rest along the way up where there wasn’t much traffic going down. Suddenly, a bunch of cars descended. We continued on, and our expectation was realized. A construction site was blocking the road, and we were just a little too late. We had to wait more than an hour.

Upon reaching the pass known as Abano, we decided to spend the night there. This allowed us to enjoy its beautiful views more often. Full of energy, we started heading towards our destination. We just needed to wait a moment for some roadwork. Then, we reached Omalo, a village located on a high plain in the heart of the Great Caucasus. Beautiful!

After spending the night near the village, we took the same route back since there is no other road. The weather was even better that day, so we took our time again and enjoyed the views from the pass. On our way down, we encountered road construction sites again. First, we encountered a small project, and then a larger one. This time, the larger project delayed our descent by approximately two hours. We were aware of our destination for the night, so this was not a significant issue.

Our chosen campsite made us stay a little longer. This gave us time to bake some sourdough bread. However, since Germans are known to eat a lot of bread, we bought some as well. Our next destination took us back to the Greater Caucasus. We planned to go hiking the next day. Before reaching our starting point, we spent the night near an abandoned railway tunnel construction site. There was plenty of space to hide.

The next morning, we woke up and saw smoke from a fire just a hundred meters away. So, we hadn’t been alone — at least not in the morning. Creepy. Since nobody showed up, we started our hike. It went through a glacier valley to reach three lakes. One is called green, another blue, and we skipped the white one due to the upcoming clouds. Fortunately, the weather held up, and we left the mountains dry.
